Key elements of empowerment include strengthening of existing potential, the expansion of self-organisation and the promotion of an active role for women in all societal processes. Women’s influence is expanded and they become active in changing society. Integral to this process is that women become aware of their own rights, capabilities and interests.
The involvement of disadvantaged groups – frequently, women - in the decision-making and implementation process is regarded in today’s times as a basic requirement for effective development work. When women become aware of their rights, extend their networks of contacts, and take part in open and joint discussions, they increase their scope for action.
IAMANEH Switzerland strives for empowerment processes on a personal and societal level. Only by changing traditional role models is individual empowerment possible. The promotion of access to education and paid employment is an important aspect that must be guaranteed so that women can exercise control over their lives. At the same time, it is essential to expand the concept of empowerment to include men and to create new approaches that promote the transformation of gender roles.
