Our local partner organisations in Albania look back on an exceptionally challenging year. From March to May 2020, calls to the national helpline for women and girls multiplied by 4. Simultaneously, shelters had to drastically adapt their work to implement COVID-safety protocols, and to reach survivors of violence despite the lockdown. In this brief paper, Iamaneh’s partners present an overview of the available evidence of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on violence against women and girls in Albania.
The new COVID-mutations and the stagnating economy pose renewed threats for further increase of domestic violence. In this context Iamaneh’s collaborations in Albania against domestic violence are a game changer to ensure protection for survivors. With the issue remaining as pressing as ever, we are all the more thankful to all our donors, without which we could not continue this enormously important work.
