Right at the start of Housekeeping for Beginners, we are introduced to a chaotic household consisting of a lesbian couple, Dita and Suada, along with their gay roommate Toni. The house also serves as a refuge for queer teenagers who have been rejected by their families or communities. When Suada is diagnosed with a terminal illness, she makes Dita promise to take care of her daughters, Mia and Vanesa. Dita doesn’t want to be a mother, and the girls don’t want her to be their guardian. Yet, to save this patchwork family, Dita considers marrying the only available man, as the law prohibits same-sex marriage and adoption.
After the film, Dr. Serena Dankwa (Ethnological Seminar Basel) will discuss “Queer Roma Perspectives” with Serbian Roma feminist Jelena Savić and Roma activist Mo Diener. (The discussion will be held in English).
